FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Anticipation is pleased to announce that a preliminary programme schedule is now online. Any changes to the final printed programming schedule will be noted in programming updates both online and distributed at Anticipation. Our program participants include scientists, writers, artists, musicians, professors, editors, fans, and convention organizers, many of whom have agreed to speak with the press. A partial list of those who have agreed to speak with the press is included in this release; please contact media@anticipationsf.ca for details if you wish to interview any of them.

A page with the full list of programme participants (including our Guests of Honour, Neil Gaiman, Élisabeth Vonarburg, David Hartwell, Taral Wayne, Tom Doherty and Master of Ceremonies, Julie Czerneda) has been published and is available online.

Many individuals included were previously mentioned in our Also Attending list, available since earlier this year, but a number of new names are present, among them 2008 Nobel Laureate in Economics Professor Paul Krugman of the Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University and centenary professor at the London School of Economics. He has credited Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” novels with inspiring him to choose his field, and will be speaking about his experiences in a program item entitled “From SF Reader to Economist”. He will also have a conversation with Charles Stross, author of the Hugo nominated novel “Saturn’s Children”.

Anticipation a le plaisir d’annoncer que le programme préliminaire d’animations est maintenant disponible en ligne. Tous les changements au programme seront notés dans les mises à jour de la programmation affichées en ligne et distribuées lors d’Anticipation.

Nos participants à la programmation incluent des scientifiques, des écrivains, des artistes, des musiciens, des chercheurs, des rédacteurs, des fans et des organisateurs de conventions. tour of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) / visite de l'Agence Spatiale Canadienne (ASC)

Anticipation has arranged for a tour of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) for the morning of the 11 August 2009. We will arrange for a bus to take members to the CSA - departing from outside the Delta Centre-Ville at 9am. To cover the cost of the bus hire we are asking members to go on the tour to pay $20CDN. These monies will be collected at the convention, there will be a cash box for this purpose at the information desk.

The CSA has asked us to provide a list of people who will be going on the CSA tour along with the passport numbers of anyone who is not a Canadian citizen. We need to provide this information to the CSA by the 1 August 2009 (at the latest).

This also means that we can only accept names for the tour by noon of 31 July 2009 (12:00pm EDT).

Want to try out the convention but aren’t willing to risk 75 or 95$ just to see if you’re going to like it? We will offer “Taster” memberships, which are only available at the convention. Weekend memberships may be purchased any time, but cannot be picked up at Registration until 16:00 Friday August 7th. A Weekend membership provides access to the entire convention from 16:00 Friday through 08:00 Monday.

It is our pleasure to host Ms. Auf der Maur on Friday, August 7th at the Palais de congrès.

She will present her new mixed media project, an album, film, and comic. An acoustic set follows the film screening. Directed by Tony Stone, “OOOM”, a 28-minute wordless, hypnotic braid of three science-fictional storylines, was an Official Selection of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Our members may attend at no additional cost.

A bassist most well known for her work with two rock bands, Hole (which is reforming as of June 2009) and Smashing Pumpkins, Ms. Auf de Maur is an accomplished photographer as well as a musician. She is a dual American-Canadian citizen of Franco-Swiss ancestry who grew up in Kenya and Montréal, attending F.A.C.E. School and Concordia University.

C’est avec grand plaisir que nous l’acceuillerons vendredi le 7 août à 22 h au Palais des congrès.

Elle présentera son nouveau projet multi-médias, un mélange de musique, de film et de bande dessinée. Un bref concert suit la projection du film. Dirigée par Tony Stone, « OOOM », une pièce sans paroles d’une durée de 28 minutes, consiste en trois fils science-fictionesques qui s’entrelacent de façon quasi hypnotique. Cette pièce fut une sélection officielle du Sundance Film Festival de 2009. Nos membres peuvent participer à cette activité sans frais supplémentaires.

Madame Auf Der Maur est une bassiste connue surtout pour son travail avec deux groupes rock, Hole (qui se remet ensemble à compter de juin 2009) et les Smashing Pumpkins, et une photographe chevronnée. Elle est de citoyenneté américaine et canadienne et est de descendance franco suisse. Elle a grandit au Kenya et au Canada, où elle a fréquenté l’école F.A.C.E et l’Université Concordia.

Anticipation to offer “Taster” memberships.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Heard about World Science Fiction Conventions (Worldcons) and think they sound cool but not sure they’re worth the money? Then Taster memberships are for you.

Here’s how it works. Whenever you show up, you go to the convention’s Registration Desk. There you’ll pay for a Day Membership (75–95 CAD), depending on the day of the convention and whether you are buying an adult or a child membership). Your membership badge will be time-stamped. Then you may wander about the convention freely. See the Exhibits, the Art Show, and the Dealers Room. Hear a speaker. Get autographs. Watch a film. Join a filk sing. Go see a program item or two (there will be hundreds over the course of the convention).

If Worldcon really isn’t for you, then just go back to Registration during posted open hours within three hours of your time-stamp and you’ll receive all but $20 of your money back for an adult membership and all but $10 of your money back for a child membership. But if you like what you find and want to hang around the rest of the day and evening, then just stay for the rest of the day. Your badge will let you stay and attend all open events until the next morning. If you want to attend more days, just come back and buy another Day Membership or convert your Day to a Full Membership. It’s easy and safe. And you’ll find out for yourself what all the fuss is about. (We’ve been going for years and there’s so much great stuff to do we can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t want to stay but some people need to try it for themselves to be sure.)

Taster Memberships paid by cash, traveler’s check, or credit card will be refunded immediately. Memberships paid by check will be refunded by mail. We will not issue refunds after registration closes for the day. On days where registration is open until 20:00, no refunds are given after the close of that day’s Registration. We encourage you to purchase by 17:00 on those days, otherwise you will not have the full 3 hours benefit of the taster membership. One Taster Membership per person. We will accept US dollars as well as Canadian dollars at Registration at the convention. Due to the volatility of the currency exchange market, at the door rates in US dollars will only be set a few days before the convention.

Avez-vous entendu des congrès mondiaux de la science fiction (Worldcons) et vous pensez qu’ils semblent super mais vous êtes non sûr s’ils valent l’argent? Puis inscriptions «d’essai» sont une bonne option pour vous.

Voici comment ça marche. Quand vous arrivez au congrès, vous allez au bureau d’enregistrement. Là, vous allez payer le coût d’une inscription d’une journée (75–95 CAD, dépendant du jour du congrès). Votre badge d’inscription sera horodaté. Après ça, vous pouvez errer la convention librement, voir les objets exposés, la galerie d’art et la salle des commerçants. Vous pouvez écouter à un orateur, obtenir des autographes, regarder à un film, engager dans un chant filk ou aller voir un article d’un programme ou deux (il y en aura des centaines sur le cours du congrès).

Si Worldcon n’est vraiment pas pour vous, vous avez seulement qu’à retourner à l’enregistrement en dans trois heures de votre horodatage et vous allez recevoir un remboursement sauf $20. Mais si vous aimez ce que vous voyez et vous voulez passer le reste de la journée et de la soirée, restez pour le reste de la journée. Votre badge va vous laisser rester et assister à tous les événements ouverts jusqu’au prochain matin (ceci inclue la cérémonie les Prix Hugo ou la Mascarade). Si vous voulez assister plus qu’une journée, vous avez juste à retourner et acheter une autre inscription de jour ou vous pouvez convertire votre inscription de jour à une inscription complète.

C’est facile et sûr. Et vous découvrirez pour vous-même c’est quoi tout le chichi. (Nous assistons depuis des années et il y a tant de choses extraordinaires à faire que nous croyons qu’il y a personne qui ne voudrait pas rester. Mais il y a des gens qui doivent l’essayer eux-mêmes affin d’être sûr).

Les inscriptions avant-goût payées en argent, chèque de voyage, ou carte de crédit sera remboursées immédiatement. Les inscriptions payées par chèque seront remboursées par la poste. Aucun remboursement après 17h00 de chaque jour. Une inscription avant-goût par personne.

Child care is now open. KiddieCorp will be providing the services. The cost will be US$9.00 per child per hour for hours that you buy before 22 July, 2009 at 5:00pm PST and US$12.00 per child per hour for hours that you buy after that. Advance registration will be in US dollars only. KiddieCorp has agreed to accept Canadian cash during the convention but all credit card payments will be processed in US dollars.

A ghost walk of Old Montréal arranged especially for Anticipation members (on behalf of adriennef)

After the successful ghost walk that was put together for Denvention 3, I wanted to let the Anticipation membership know that I made arrangements with Old Montréal Ghosts for another special ghost walking tour for this year's Worldcon members. Although a notice is posted on the Anticipation website, this is being coordinated independently from the convention.

Folks who know me are already aware that I really love ghost stories, but these tours also provide a great deal of historical background of the locale. I think it's fun to see these places up close and it's really kewl perspective on the cities I visit.

In order to insure this place and time in the tour operator's schedule, I had to supply them with a Visa number, so I need to sell 20 tickets or the balance comes out of my pocket. Stroll With the Stars (on behalf of Stu Segal)

Less than a month away, now I'm starting to get excited! One of the things I'm participating in is Stroll With The Stars - an opportunity to go for a morning stroll with some of our favorite Authors, Artists and Editors.

This was the idea of a number of the participants who were looking for a way to go to the Con, do all the stuff we normally do, but also get out in the fresh air for a healthy stroll and some good conversation. (And let me stress, we mean "stroll" - def: a leisurely walk. This will not be a heart-pounding aerobic activity, it will be a stroll).

Some of the most interesting Authors, Artists and Editors have agreed to lead the Strolls, and will be strolling along at the right pace to have a good conversation.

Anticipation is pleased to congratulate Guest of Honour Neil Gaiman, for being honoured with the John Newbery Medal for childrens' literature, which the American Library Association awards annually.

His Hugo winning children’s novel Coraline (adapted into a motion picture which premieres February 6, 2009) was a New York Times and international bestseller and an enormous critical success; it also won the BSFA, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards.

Many other authors, artists, editors, and scholars have applied to participate on our program, and we will be releasing the names of those who have agreed to speak with the press within the next several months.

Museum day is coming

Sunday May 25th is Montreal's Museum day. Free admission is granted to 29 museums from 9am to 6pm. This includes free shuttles rides between museums from 9am to 4:30pm. Every year there's a great turnout for this event. The site offers an interactive map and also mention of the Montreal Museum pass. It opens the doors to 32 museums throughout Greater Montreal for the rest of the year.

The museum pass is a great way to explore Montreal's museums. There are two levels of pass available:

$45 taxes included = your choice of 3 days within 3 weeks, without public transit pass.

$50 taxes included = 3 consecutive days, with a 3-day public transit tourist card.

The Montreal City Weblog has a link this morning to a new musical festival called Festiraam (warning - site plays music on every page) the Festival International des Rythmes d'Afriques et des Antilles de Montréal. The festival has three concerts at Metropolis, the first is this Friday (April 4th, 2007).

Friday is world music night, featuring Africando at 9pm. Saturday is urban music night, featuring the Magic System at 9pm, and Sunday is Reggae Music Night, featuring Alpha Blondy at 8pm. Tidiane Soumach, president of FESTIRAAM, founded the festival to promote the changing and maturing music of African and the Caribbean.

Tickets are available through TicketPro. The concerts are held at Metropolis.

Maple Sugar Season

The cabane à sucre season is about to start. To Montrealers - this is a 1/2 day trip divided between eating delicious foods (all of which feature maple syrup), walking outside to tour the maple farm, and sleigh-rides (if there's enough snow). My favorite is making maple taffy (pouring hot reduced syrup on fresh fallen snow to make it cool, then gathering it up with a popsicle stick). Next to the Montreal High Lights festival, it's a great way to spend a weekend in the region.

If you're thinking of coming to Montreal to attend Worldcon but don't know what else to do while you're here, well, don't worry! We'll keep you informed over the next 20 months as to why this city is such a great place to be.

Personally I'm not sure why, with 5 days of Worldcon events - dance, masquerade, partiespartiesparties, etc - anyone would still be awake enough for more fun. But in case you're the non-sleeping type, don't worry! Firstly, bars in Montreal are open until 3am! (Yes, 3am!) And the legal drinking age is 18! (Yes, 18!). Ok, wait, what? You don't need another reason? LOL!

Alright, but listen, we also have a casino. Yes, a real live gambling casino, not very far from downtown. It's open 24/7, free indoor parking, and a very reasonable dress code (no need for the suits and ties!). There are also entertainment shows daily and a plethora of other events. Con*cept, Montréal's annual science-fiction and fantasy convention will be taking place on the 12th to the 14th of October. Not only will we be there, sitting behind a table and throwing a party, but we will also be holding a meeting for anyone who is interested in volunteering for Anticipation. This meeting will be taking place on Saturday afternoon (the exact time and room are still to be determined) and we hope to see many of you there.

What's that you say? You only have enough time to attend the meeting but not the whole con and paying the membership fee just to attend a meeting sounds too expensive? No problem! We have made arrangements with the Con*Cept organizers for our meeting to be open to the public and not just with the convention members. You will have to show up no more than 15 minutes early and leave at the end of the meeting. If you want to hang around the consuite, visit the dealer's room or participate in any other convention activity, then you will have to buy a membership.

Matsuri Japon Festival

This weekend I'll be at Otakuthon 2007. There's lots of events planned (Masquerade, a concert, a Saturday night dance, Otakuthon Idol / Competition, artist area, art gallery, cosplay café, and more), a great lineup of guests (Guest of Honour - Venus Terzo and many more); all at a location near the heart of downtown.

This coming weekend, Montreal will be hosting Anthrofest. This small furry convention is being organized for a second time this year and all signs point to it being a successful, if not more than last year's.

The vote to determine the host city for the 2009 WorldCon will be held at Nippon 2007. Mail-in ballots must be received no latter than Tuesday, July 31, 2007. Anyone who is a supporting member of Nippon 2007 may vote in the Hugo's (online) and the site selection (off-line, mail in ballot). The only other alternative is to have an attending member carry your site selection ballot to the event.

If you're in the Montréal area on Sunday, July 29th and wish to hand off your site selection ballot to an attending member of Nippon 2007 - you can. René Walling (Chairman of the Anticipation in 2009 committee) will be at the Old Orchard Pub on Monkland from 11am through until 3pm. Please remember to give him both your ballot and your voting fee. (Eds note: There will be more than just René at the event of course ...).

Since it's too much work for a single person, it's a wiki and people have already started listing an impressive number of works for a site that is two days old.

Montreal Museum Day

This Sunday (May 27/07) is the day to visit museums in Montreal. This year 27 museums are participating. The STC (the bus company) provides free transport along four lines to make traveling from museum to museum easier. Free parking is available at 4 lots. The event starts at 9am and ends around 6. As already mentioned, Boréal will be this coming weekend. One of the most international conventions around, it will welcome people from at least four countries and two continents. With an impressive guest list that includes: Alain Bergeron, Éric Henriet, Xavier Mauméjean, James Morrow, Geoff Ryman, and Élisabeth Vonarburg. Not one, but three awards: The Prix Boréal, the Grand Prix de la Science-Fiction et du Fantastique québécois and the prix Rosny Aîné will be handed out this weekend. That and traditional events like the on-site writing contest promise a fun filled weekend ahead.

The Hugo Award nominees were announced. And once again several Canadians have a shot at the famous rocket. These include Peter Watts for his novel Blindsight, Robert Charles Wilson for his novella "Julian: A Christmas Story", and Geoff Ryman for his novelette "Pol Pot's Beautiful Daughter (Fantasy)". In addition to which, all of the nominees for Best Dramatic Presentation - Short Form have Canada somewhere in the background, both Stargate and Battlestar Galactica being shot in Vancouver and the CBC being co-producer (with the BBC) of the new Doctor Who tv show.

Faceless invasion comes to Montréal

The faceless invasion describes itself as "a scavenger hunt - on crack". Co-ed teams of 5-8 people wearing Mexican wrestling masks will scour the city to do everything from make a house of cards using 1 to 4 decks to tattooing the faceless invasion logo (3x3") anywhere on your body. Each item earns the team points. The teams must record their activities using whatever camera equipment they have. McGill, Concordia and UdeM students will be chosen as the 12 judges for the event. The team with the most points wins the overall competition and the prize. Special honours will be given to teams that did particularly well in certain categories. Judging is based on the electronic recordings of the teams activities.

The event is supposed to last from noon to midnight on March 31st. There will be about 200 items on the list, so there are lots of ways to win. Registration closed March 19th, so technically the teams are already formed.

They are having a bake sale fundraiser tomorrow (March 22nd, 2007) from 10 to 2pm at the Seventh Floor lounge Area at Concordia university.

Ad Astra Report

After braving some bad weather, we arrived in Toronto on Friday evening, in time to register and attend some of the parties. The chocolate tasting hosted by CACE was once again a highlight of the evening. Saturday was spent sitting behind the Anticipation table and attending a few panels, then preparing for our party where we served not one, but two briskets of Montreal smoked meat. Sunday was spent behind the table once again and then saying goodbye to friends old and new.

Après quelques heures de route dans la tempête de vendredi, nous sommes arrivés à Toronto à temps pour s'incrire et aller voir quelques party. Comme d'habitude, le party de CACE où une variété étonnante de chocolats était mise à la disposition de nos papilles gustatives fut un des haut points de cette soirée. Le lendemain fut occupé à faire la promotion d'Anticipation et à voir quelques tables rondes suivi de la préparation de notre party ou nous avons servi deux briskettes de smoked meat. finalement, dimanche passa assez rapidement à continuer notre travail derrière la table d'Anticipation et à dire au revoir à tout le monde.

Boskone report

After a long drive, an hour of which was spent getting lost in Boston traffic, we were finally dropped off at the convention hotel, a brand new Westin. We checked in our room and I immediately had to rush to get some items donated by Jo Walton to the Mike Ford Memorial Auction & Extravaganza. I then spend the rest of the evening seeing old friends, going out for supper and
partying a little bit. Saturday was mostly spent behind the Anticipation table, answering questions and promoting the bid. This was followed by preparations for the party which we hosted that evening until early Sunday morning.
The rest of Sunday was spent planning our activities at other conventions and getting home.

Après plusieurs heures de route, dont une à essayer de trouver l'hotel du congrès nous nous sommes finalement retrouvé au congrès qui prenait place dans un tout nouveau Westin. Après avoir mis nos bagages dans notre chambre, j'ai amené le don de Jo Walton (plusieurs livres autographiés) au Mike Ford Memorial Auction & Extravaganza au organisateurs dudit encan. Suivirent plusieur rencontres avec de vieux amis et une sortie pour le souper ainsi que quelques temps dans les party. Le samedi fut passé à faire de la promotion à la table d'Anticipation, puis à préparer notre party qui finit au petit matin le dimanche. Après s'être reposé un peu, nous avons passé le reste du dimanche à planifier nos activités dans les congrès à venir et à rentrer à la maison.

We now have a livejournal (special thanks to hittite for reserving us the space). And the atom feed of the anticipation website should be updating again. It was pretty spotty for a while, but I believe it is finally fixed.

La fête des Neiges de Montréal

This year marks the 25th year of our winter festival (called the festival of snows). The site is huge and filled with activities all day long. The new mascot is a polar bear named Boule de Neige (Snowball). The festival is a family event with lots of outdoor activities that runs from January 24th through February 11th.

The weather in Montréal has been alternating between cold and frigid; but at least there's snow.

Smofcon, the convention runner's convention tool place last weekend and several members of our bid committee were there to network and learn.

The convention started Friday evening with an icebreaker event, sponsored by Anticipation. Several teams of fans had to construct a mysterious object with Tinkertoys based on a design only one of them could see and which he or she had to communicate to the others verbally. It was an interesting exercise in teamwork and communication. To get an idea what the event was like, check out Michael Nelson's photos.

I spent Saturday was both attending and being on panels. The big Saturday evening event was the "Fannish Inquisition", a rite of passage for bids involving an intense Q&A session with all the convention attendees present. New bids also announced their intentions to run, none of them for 2009.

Smofcon, la convention des organisateurs de conventions a eu lieu la fin de semaine passée et plusieurs membres de notre comité y était pour apprendre et faire des contacts.

La convention a commencé vendredi soir avec un événement dont Anticipation était le commanditaire. Plusieurs équipes de fans devait construire un objet mystérieux avec des Tinkertoys basé sur un design que seul l'un d'entre eu a vu. C'était un exercice de travail d'équipe et de communication assez interessant. Vous pouvez voir les photos de Michael Nelson pour avoir une meilleure idée de la soirée.

Le samedi fut assez occuper avec plusieurs tables de discussion et "l'inquisition fannique" une épreuve pour tout les comités de candidatures ou ils se font demander des questions avec tout les membres du congrès présents. Plusieurs nouvelles candidatures ont aussi été annoncées, aucune d'entre elles n'était pour l'année 2009.

CBC Radio One (Montréal) has debated the merits of her choices and about as many callers seem to have agreed to her selection as disagreed.

What to do in Montréal in November

Well, the leaves have all turned colour here, and most have fallen away. The days have gotten colder, the time has changed back to normal (from daylight savings time), and thus feel shorter still. But Montréal still has a lot going on in the city in November.

The Cinemania Film Festival starts on November 2nd and runs until the 12th. This film festival features the best french films (all of which are available to be viewed subtitled). If you prefer documentaries, there's the The Montreal international documentary film festival from November 9-19, 2006.

We also have a great roundup of concerts both big (Bob Dylan, Elton John) to the medium (The Tragically Hip) and everything in between; including the Millinium Peace Conference.

Hi.
For those of you who've asked ... I've been tinkering with the site's layout. The main site should now display in IE, FireFox, and Opera without scrollbars. I cannot promise a perfect layout in Netscape 4, but it should - at least - be readable.

The blog is another matter. I've finally figured out what I changed (and how to fix it) so the archive links now work - but now the formatting is all wrong. I shall be trying to fix that over the coming week (but, considering the fact that formatting all those pages is not *currently* automatic, it might take some time).

We'll be at V-Con in Vancouver this coming weekend. In addition to manning a fan table, we'll be throwing a party on Saturday night where congoers can look forward to having a taste of Montréal smoked meat and other goodies.
